JOB DESCRIPTION
Duties:
The Distribution Engineering team serves British Columbia from offices in Burnaby (Edmonds), Victoria, and Vernon. This diverse and dedicated team of engineering professionals is involved in connecting new customers of all sizes, from Tesla supercharger stations in Vernon, to commercial redevelopment projects in Downtown Vancouver, residential developments in Victoria, and large infrastructure projects such as the Skytrain expansion in Surrey and Langley. Distribution Engineering is also heavily involved in supporting Operations through investigations and studies, as well as, providing engineering expertise for internal and external designers to ensure the distribution system is operated, maintained, repaired, upgraded/replaced, and expanded with a Safety by Design mindset.
The Senior Engineer will be part of the Lower Mainland Distribution Engineering team, stationed in Burnaby. They provide engineering support for system reinforcements and expansion of the electrical distribution system to supply domestic, industrial, and commercial load including Independent Power Producers. Further, the Senior Engineer supports Capital Projects and Programs, Operations, Maintenance, Repair and Replacement of the BC Hydro Distribution System. Regional area accountabilities will be determined once the successful candidate has been appointed.
The position includes, but is not limited to, the following capabilities and duties:
- Investigate, analyze, and solve a variety of engineering problems, many of which are challenging and unusual in nature. Contribute to the development of technical standards and design practices.
- Perform circuit analysis: load flow, voltage stability, fault current, motor start, power quality emission limit and protection coordination studies. Design equipment settings.
- Make recommendations for system improvements and the connection of new customers to the Distribution Planning team.
- Impart engineering knowledge: give instructions, advice and technical guidance to other engineers, project managers, designer technicians, design technologists, and technical support staff.
- Work closely with stakeholders to reach consensus and drive innovation, finding engineering solutions that add value, address employee and public safety, protect the environment, balance competing interests, and address full life cycle cost.
- Validate the scope of planned Capital Projects and provide feedback to the Distribution Planning Team.
- Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with internal and external colleagues and clients to determine relative priorities, assess the impact of work on others and resolve issues of concern.
- Fulfill the role of Owner’s Engineer by reviewing the work of external consultants to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results, meeting BC Hydro system needs, and adherence to accepted engineering practices.
- Work independently, under general direction, with work assigned in terms of broadly defined objectives and budget limitations. Advice of manager may be sought in critical areas or as high-profile work that would impact the work of others.
- Work effectively with Project and Program teams to deliver Capital Programs
Qualifications:
- Have a degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized/accredited university. Engineering degrees in other disciplines may be considered if the candidate has the required level of applicable experience for this position.
- Be registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC).
- Have a minimum of 8 years of relevant engineering experience in utility distribution engineering or an equivalent industry.
- Demonstrate technical knowledge in both overhead and underground electric utility distribution systems operating at voltages up to and including 35kV.
- Possesses good verbal and written communications skills to adequately articulate and discuss technical options, present proposed solutions to a wide range of audiences, and the ability to adapt to the different understanding levels of the audience.
- Demonstrate strong leadership, teamwork, relationship management, and inter-personal skills.
- Demonstrate organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Apply practical knowledge and sound judgment in the analysis and resolution of problems.

Our four role types identify the degree of flexibility an employee could have to work from home based on the type of work they do. The flexibility for an individual job is up to the manager for each position and the operational requirements. Employees also have the right to work full-time from the office if they prefer.
